Creative therapy (using art)

This is a universal approach, which can be used with almost any request. Its main difference is usage of art in the therapy process. It can be passive – no need to create something yourself, and active when you’re creating. Example of passive is working with metaphorical associative cards (special images sets) in the range of ways – describing them, arrange them in collage etc. Active creative process often involves drawing or writing stories, but not limited to this (clay modelling f.e.). Also creative therapy can be used as part of the other approaches if you’re okay with it.
Main benefits of this approach:
👉Induces relaxation and emotion release
👉Helps to distance yourself
👉Highly insightful
👉Can be done with minimum conversation if needed
👉Works more gentle, but faster then purely verbal approaches

Positive and transcultural psychotherapy

As previous one it’s also universal and can be used with any request. Meanwhile it’s more ‘traditional’ talking therapy. Main difference is – 5-staged therapeutic process which focused on certainty about natural capacity of every human to have enough strength to overcome any difficulties. Also this type of therapy involves search for the solution in experiences of other people and even cultures, as well as within oneself. Therapeutic process is very client oriented and has many layers depending on the needs.
Main benefits of this approach:
👉Sees every problem as someway beneficial
👉Has defined structure
👉Encourages individual to explore their attitudes and reflect
👉Has self-help as its part
👉Sees personality as differently developed set of capacities which every person has (f.e. love, honesty, belief, exactness)

Crisis psychological counselling (trauma therapy, trauma aftercare)

Type of counselling which is used specifically to treat consequences of traumatic experience. Such experiences can be divorce, violence, forced migration, abuse, accidents, etc. In general, there is no clear list of traumatic events, because the same event will be perceived differently by different people.
This type of counselling is given after traumatic event is ended, not during. It helps the reaction to the event to become less acute (also to get rid of nightmares, flashbacks and other unpleasant consequences of a traumatic event, if any are present).
Main benefits of this type of counselling:
👉Helps to accept and incorporate unpleasant experiences, no matter how difficult they are and go back to normal life
👉Uses and accepts techniques from different approaches
👉Has techniques for verbal, as well as non-verbal treatment
👉Focused on the treatment of traumatic experience consequences
👉Oriented to individual needs here and now, flexible in terms of session time and approach

Sandplay therapy

Type of creative therapy which can be used blended with almost any counselling approach. Has all the benefits from creative therapy, as described above. The main difference, and that’s why I highlight it separately, I believe it’s best to be used as distinct approach. It works amazingly in terms of finding the best solution or playing out past and future situations. Also direct contact with sand helps many people to relax. It may seem a little childish at first, but if you dare to start, it can help you to feel more free.
Main benefits of this approach:
👉Easy and fun type of creative therapy
👉Good for family counselling
👉Helps to find the best solution through replaying different variations
👉Mix of active and passive creating
👉Helps to connect with inner child state and overcome inner limitations

DBT (Dialectical behaviour therapy)

DBT is based on CBT but adapted to include emotional side in it. DBT techniques form four big groups: mindfulness, distress tolerance, emotional regulation and interpersonal effectiveness. The main goal is to understand and regulate your emotions. DBT can be helpful in many cases, but especially when working with eating disorders, borderline personality disorder, self-harm, depression and substance abuse.
Main benefits of this approach:
👉Focused on learning new skills
👉Emotions are as important as cognitions
👉Helps with anxiety, stress management and many more
👉Self-help is an important part
👉Has protocols and instructions for easier understanding

Family constellation therapy + neurographics

Unique blended approach which I learned directly from its founder in Ukraine. Family constellation therapy approach based on the idea, that previous generations always make unconscious impact on the next within family. For example, unconditional fear of losing money (or feeling guilt when spending even on something important) may have roots in grandma’s trauma when she had lost all her money.
Neurographics, on the other hand, is type of creative therapy. It’s based on the idea that when drawing specific figures and lines which are visually similar to neurons, person could have impact on the actual building or ruining neural connections. Thus new behavioural patterns are created. Important notice: this approach can’t be used if personality disorders are present. Also it could have radical impact on personality and requires openness to its concepts.
Main benefits of this approach:
👉Fast results (normally 1-3 sessions is enough)
👉Best used for requests which have generational root – same problem in 2 and more generations
👉Helps to change deep unconscious psychological attitudes
👉Highly insightful

Dream interpretation (C. Jung)

Type of counselling which goal is to understand dreams. It’s based on Carl Jung’s theory about importance of symbols in the dreams. It could be done as part of counselling process or independently when repetitive dreams or nightmares are present, if they aren’t consequences of traumatic experience. These techniques teach reflection and encourage to explore oneself.
Main benefits of this type of counselling:
👉Helps to feel connection with internal thoughts and feelings, accept yourself
👉Works best with repetitive dreams or nightmares
👉Highly reflective
👉Helps to understand unconscious part of self

Guided meditations (mindfulness)

Techniques which based on the ancient Eastern meditation practices but were modified by psychologists to suit counselling needs. They helps to relax and feel present but also can be done to release feelings, find the best solution, accept yourself, let go of unwanted attitudes or behavioural patterns, forgive someone and so on. Often is done along with creative therapy to enhance impact and gain more insights.
Main benefits of this approach:
👉Helps with variety of requests
👉Releases tension and reduces anxiety
👉Improves mind-body connection
👉Helps to find original solutions

Music therapy techniques

This is type of creative therapy in some countries, whilst independent approach in the UK. I learned it as a part of the art therapy course, so using only some of the techniques. They works amazingly for releasing tension and feelings. I created a complex of sessions dedicated to relaxation which based on meditations and music therapy exercises. There are also various techniques that help to express yourself, reduce fear of public speaking, or improve communication in couples counselling.
Main benefits of this approach:
👉Releases tension
👉Reduces stress and anxiety
👉Helps to feel free expressing yourself, find your voice, improve communication
👉Very good for counselling couples or group therapy

Psychological counselling after migration

This type of counselling is designed to help those who experienced different variations of migration. Trauma therapy could be part of this counselling if needed. The main difference is that it’s focused on helping with adaptation and integration in the new country. It’s important to understand that labour migrants may need this specific help as well as forced. Because adaptation to the new country could be challenging experience no matter what the reason for relocating was.
I’ve done two researches within my diploma works about psychological problems of forced migrants and different ways to help them. Also I worked with migrants from different backgrounds for three years. As immigrant myself, I feel the importance of providing such type of psychological intervention to those who need it.
Main benefits of this type of counselling:
👉Focused specifically on migration experience
👉Helps to understand personal limitations and possibilities
👉Uses techniques from different approaches which will suit best individual needs
👉Considers cultural differences and their impact
👉Helps to find individual ways to adaptation and integration
